Craig is a self-taught drummer, who started playing in 1993. Craig joined his first band “Sulphur Yellow” in 1995, and through the members of that band met up with and joined his second band “Light Entertainment.” The bass player in Craigs second band was Ronnie, now bassist with Best before Midnight.
While a member of Light Entertainment a ceilidh and pop classics outfit, Craig also played with numerous rock bands, Shyne, Jester Uk, Peyote Valve, and Locosea. After leaving Locosea Craig had a years holiday from playing, before Ronnie asked him to join a new ceilidh and covers band ShoeString.
ShoeString became a hugely successful outfit, playing all the major wedding and ceilidh venues in Scotland, including two years running the Hogmanay band at Cameron House Hotel, Loch Lomond, arguably Scotlands top Hotel venue at Hogmanay.
Unusually, for a drummer, Ronnie describes Craig as the defining sound of ShoeStrings’ high energy ceilidh music. Craig explains When I am asked if I play the drums, I tell them “No. I play the tune, it just happens to be that my instrument is the drums”
It was while playing for ShoeString, that Craig met Phil, Fraser and Jim, fiddle, keyboards and lead guitar in Best before Midnight, as each of them on various occasions were stand in musicians, for regular ShoeString members, who were on holiday etc.
Over the last few years, Craig has also toured extensively with the Ballochleam Highland Dancers, performing at The Lorient Interceltic festival in France, The world folk dance festival in Palma Majorca, Steenvoorde festival in Northern France, and most memorably, on a professional tour of Taiwan, with a piper, and with Ronnie on guitar and nine of the Ballochleam Highland Dancers.
Influences
Craig listens to most genres of music, but mainly he would say, heavy metal/rock. Because of this he has developed his own style of drumming, using many syncopated beats
Craig is an influential drummer, and looks forward to exploring more new territory, and particularly a new ceilidh and Celtic sound with Best Before Midnight
